The Idea

I've done this project about the Russian shadow oil market because it was about something I am interested in a lot and because it is related to some of my core values, such as a deep understanding of the situation broadly highlighted in the media and taking into consideration the different parts of the issue.

The Design Challenge

It is a case where form was dictated by the content. My task was to create a multifaceted and complex illustration of the subject, giving my audience the opportunity to learn more about topics that might usually be discovered in expert materials, which sometimes are inaccessible to people without particular knowledge of economics, global trade, and political science. Thus, I had to collect the information and provide it in a very digestible way, making sure that the audience would be engaged in the interaction.

The Outcome

Thus, I've developed a story-based game with elements of a choose-your-own-adventure mechanic. The main elements of this game, if we simplify, are the texts, the logic, and the visuals. Let's break it down below.

That compromised oil

This is a story-based game, meaning that narratives within it have the greatest significance for audience engagement. Moreover, within the engaging narratives, I wanted to maintain professional-grade information (gathered through interviews with key experts and primary research) about the current situation in oil markets.  I've created two main branches that are determined by the player's first choice – they either play as Russia or the Cap Coalition.  Thus, the audience can experience the role of a leader on each side.    The texts and mechanics were tested on a focus audience, which gave me an opportunity to create a more captivating and sophisticated plot.

Information Architechture

The game logic involves a rhythmic change between interaction with the narrative and previously recorded cut scenes. This structure  has been planned and implemented for an enhanced engagement experience.  The game was developed using the Godot game engine, thanks to the expertise of a skilled developer who prefers to remain anonymous. The format also enables the possibility of publishing my game online, making it accessible to everyone.

Visuals

The interface is text focused, being framed with the corresponding seamlessly animated images in the background.
Cutscenes serve as visual records of simulated oil, corresponding to specific points in the game's narrative. They are also addressing the player directly rather than a  role they take in the game.
